  • Yankees’ Gleyber Torres: Moves into two hole

    Rotowire Apr 7, 2021

Torres will start at shortstop and bat second Wednesday against the Orioles.

The 24-year-old has batted out of either the fourth or fifth spot in the lineup in each of the Yankees’ first five games, but he’ll slide into the two hole with Aaron Judge (side) sitting out the series finale. Torres heads into Wednesday’s contest with a five-game hit streak on the line, but only one of his five hits (a double) has gone for extra bases.

  • Yankees’ Gio Urshela: Losing heat on throws

    Rotowire Apr 7, 2021

Urshela is averaging 77.6 miles per hour on his throws from third base, a drop of nearly five mph from his 2020 average, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

The loss of velocity could be attributed to Urshela still attempting to regain full strength in his throwing shoulder after he required surgery in December to remove a bone spur. Urshela, who is off to a 4-for-18 start to the season, has noticed a similar decline in his Statcast metrics at the plate, with his average exit velocity, max exit velocity and hard-hit percentage all down from 2020. The small sample of data thus far makes it difficult to draw any major conclusions for Urshela’s rest-of-season outlook, but the early returns aren’t overly encouraging.

  • Yankees’ Aaron Judge: Managing side soreness

    Rotowire Apr 7, 2021

Judge isn’t in the lineup for Wednesday’s game against Baltimore due to a sore left side, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Manager Aaron Boone revealed that Judge was dealing with soreness in his side during Tuesday’s game, and the team didn’t want him to push through it Wednesday. Boone didn’t sound too concerned about the issue but also said that he “wouldn’t rule anything out,” Jack Curry of YES Network reports. Judge will have an extra day to recover since the Yankees have a day off Thursday.

  • Yankees’ Aaron Judge: Sitting out Wednesday

    Rotowire Apr 7, 2021

Judge isn’t starting Wednesday’s game against the Orioles.

Judge will take a seat for the first time this season after he went 8-for-22 with two home runs and five RBI in the first five games. Clint Frazier will shift to right field while Brett Gardner takes over in left field Wednesday.

  • Yankees’ Robinson Chirinos: Taking swings

    Rotowire Apr 7, 2021

Chirinos (wrist) has started swinging a bat and making throws to second base, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports.

Chirinos suffered a fractured right wrist as a result of a HBP in mid-March, and he was given an estimated recovery timeline of 4-6 weeks. The backstop appears to be making strides toward reaching that target, and he expects to start hitting off velocity soon. Chirinos is likely to work out at the team’s alternate training site upon his return — even when healthy, he sat third on the Yankees’ catching depth chart.

  • Yankees’ Justin Wilson: Throws bullpen session

    Rotowire Apr 7, 2021

Wilson (shoulder) threw to live hitters Tuesday and is on track to return from the injured list this weekend, Max Goodman of Sports Illustrated reports.

The throwing session went well, according to manager Aaron Boone, increasing the likelihood that the left-hander will return from the IL when eligible this Friday. Wilson has been throwing for over a week after being shut down with shoulder tightness near the end of spring training.

  • Yankees’ Mike Tauchman: Still working out at first base

    Rotowire Apr 7, 2021

Tauchman has continued practicing at first base during the regular season, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Tauchman took reps at the position during spring training, and there seems to be some interest — at least on his part — in seeing time at first base this season. “I can play four positions (as a left-handed thrower), so why not play all four?” he stated recently. The 30-year-old might benefit with more at-bats if the Yankees see him as an option at first, especially while Luke Voit (knee) remains out. As it stands, Tauchman has gotten only one at-bat thus far this season, though he has swiped two bags as a pinch runner.

  • Yankees’ Aaron Judge: Homers again, drives in four

    Rotowire Apr 7, 2021

Judge went 3-for-5 with a three-run home run and another RBI during Tuesday’s win over the Orioles.

Judge tallied a pair of singles including one RBI before extending New York’s lead with a two-out, three-run homer against Wade LeBlanc in the eighth inning. It was the second long ball in as many games for the 28-year-old slugger, who has posted a solid .364 batting average so far.

  • Yankees’ Jay Bruce: Swats first homer with Yankees

    Rotowire Apr 7, 2021

Bruce went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk and another run scored during Tuesday’s win over Baltimore.

Bruce got the scoring started in the second inning by launching a solo homer off Dean Kremer. It was the first long ball of the year and the first in a Yankees uniform for the 34-year-old, who has been serving as the starting first baseman to begin the season with Luke Voit nursing a knee injury.

  • Yankees’ Gerrit Cole: Fans 13 in scoreless gem

    Rotowire Apr 7, 2021

Cole (1-0) earned the win by twirling seven scoreless frames with 13 strikeouts against the Orioles on Tuesday, allowing four hits and no walks.

Coming off a solid Opening Day start during which he notched eight strikeouts, throwing 62 of his 97 pitches for strikes, Cole put his brilliance on full display against Baltimore, sending 13 batters down swinging while throwing 71 of 97 pitches for strikes. In fact, Cole’s 13 strikeouts marked a regular-season high in a Yankees uniform. Meanwhile, the right-hander’s strong outing lifted New York to its 12th straight home victory against the Orioles. Cole will look to remain in the win column on the road Monday at Toronto.

  • Yankees’ Michael King: Optioned to alternate site

    Rotowire Apr 6, 2021

King was optioned to the Yankees’ alternate training site Tuesday.

This move clears a spot for Rougned Odor on the active roster. King logged six scoreless innings in long relief Sunday against the Blue Jays, so he’ll be back in the majors sooner than later to offer length out of the bullpen or perhaps to make a spot start.

  • Yankees’ Thairo Estrada: Designated for assignment

    Rotowire Apr 6, 2021

Estrada was designated for assignment Tuesday.

Estrada has never really seen a long look at the big-league level, so a rebuilding team may look to claim him off waivers. This clears a spot for Rougned Odor on the Yankees’ 40-man roster.

  • Report: Yankees to acquire Rougned Odor

CBS Sports Matt Snyder Apr 6, 2021

  • Yankees’ Gary Sanchez: Riding pine Tuesday

    Rotowire Apr 6, 2021

Sanchez is not in Tuesday’s lineup against the Orioles.

This is Sanchez’s first day off of the young season. He went 3-for-7 with a pair of home runs in the first two games of the season, then 0-for-8 with four strikeouts over the next two. Kyle Higashioka will start behind the dish and bat ninth.

  • Yankees’ Aaron Hicks: Sitting Tuesday

    Rotowire Apr 6, 2021

Hicks is not in Tuesday’s lineup against the Orioles.

He’s struggled mightily early in the year, going 1-for-15 with seven strikeouts in 15 at-bats through four games. Brett Gardner gets the start in center field while batting third.

  • Yankees’ Rougned Odor: Acquired by Yankees

    Rotowire Apr 6, 2021

Odor was traded from the Rangers to the Yankees on Tuesday along with cash in exchange for Josh Stowers and Antonio Cabello, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

The Yankees have helped previously unheralded players like Luke Voit and Gio Urshela reach new levels in recent seasons, but Odor is quite the reclamation project. After hitting .265/.302/.464 over his first three years in the league, he’s hit just .215/.279/.418 in the last four. He reached a new low last season, striking out 31.8 percent of the time while hitting .167. Odor is unlikely to serve as anything more than a bench option in New York unless he can demonstrate that he’s gotten back to his former level.

  • Yankees’ DJ LeMahieu: Reaches base three times

    Rotowire Apr 6, 2021

LeMahieu went 1-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored in Monday’s 7-0 win over the Orioles.

LeMahieu crossed the plate on Giancarlo Stanton’s grand slam in the fifth inning, then knocked in a run of his own on a sixth-inning single. The veteran second baseman has a .474 OBP so far this season as the leadoff hitter in a strong Yankees lineup.

                                                                           <p> ... See More ...
