Patrick Mahomes already has strong investment history in Kansas City community

With a 10-year contract worth a record-setting 450 million dollars, it is no secret that the K.C. Chiefs have heavily invested in star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. This colossal investment has already seemed to pay off in a litany of ways.

On the field, the Chiefs have never missed an AFC championship and have made two Super Bowl appearances with one victory while Mahomes is under center. In addition, former MVP Patrick Mahomes has continued to validate the large investment by being an incredibly vocal leader on the field who has shown a knack for holding his teammates accountable.

However, Mahomes’ success in Kansas City goes well beyond his incredible production on the field. He has already claimed he wishes to stay in Kansas City for the remainder of his career, and his actions have gone above and beyond in terms of substantiating this sentiment.

Just a few years into his career, Mahomes has already begun to place deep roots in Kansas City. In addition to purchasing a home in the area, he and his fiancé Brittany Matthews welcomed their daughter and newest member of Chiefs Kingdom, Sterling Skye on February 20 of this year. Thanks to Mahomes’ contract keeping him a Chief through the 2031 season, it should warm the hearts of fans to know that Sterling will get plenty of opportunities to watch her dad do what he does best on the field over the following decade.

Patrick Mahomes’ investments in the K.C. area are impressive.

In addition to starting a family in Kansas City, both Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Matthews have cemented themselves further into the community by investing in local sports teams. Putting his contract money to good use, Mahomes became the youngest owner in MLB history by purchasing a 1% stake of the Kansas City Royals. Mahomes stated, “This opportunity allows me to deepen my roots in. this community, which is something I’m excited to do”.

It should be noted that while Mahomes enjoys the Royals games, he won’t be hungry doing it. In 2018 the Texas native took to Twitter to express his desire of having a Whataburger brought to KC. This desire turned into reality when it was announced that Whataburger is planning on opening four locations in the K.C. area in March of this year. Though no opening dates are yet set, it is estimated that these openings will stimulate over 700 new jobs. Oh, and in case that wasn’t convenient enough for the part-owner of the Royals, it was announced that Whataburger is partnering with Kauffman Stadium through 2024, ensuring Royals fans can eat their new favorite burgers while cheering on their favorite MLB team.

Not to be outdone, Matthews decided to get in on the action. As a former collegiate and professional soccer player, she became a part owner of the new Kansas City NWSL expansion team. Due to FC Kansas City ceasing operations following their 2017 season, Matthews helped fill the void due to this departure and allowed women’s soccer fans in K.C. to continue to support a local team.

Never one to back down from stiff competition, in July of this year Mahomes bought ownership stake in the soccer club Sporting KC. When asked about the purchase, Mahomes responded, “I am grateful for the opportunity to join Sporting Kansas City’s ownership team and strengthen my connection to the fans and the city I love…”

These investments into the Kansas City sports community are a clear indicator that this power couple is happy and plans to remain in K.C. for the foreseeable future. May soccer fans in the region rejoice!

Beyond all this, Mahomes has done far more than for the K.C. community than purchase sports teams and make tasty burgers available. In 2019, Mahomes created his foundation 15 and the Mahomies which is “…dedicated to improving the lives of children”. Their mission is to “…support initiatives that focus on health, wellness, communities in need of resources and other charitable causes”. Mahomes is truly a superstar on and off the field, proving that he attacks both winning games and helping those in need within his community with unbridled enthusiasm.

Mahomes has also put in the work to help ensure everyone is able to express their right to vote. In 2020, Mahomes, Tyrann Mathieu and the Chiefs organization partnered with RISE, a nonpartisan initiative that assists athletes in voter registration and education. In addition to raising awareness, Mahomes along with the Chiefs put down the money to allow Arrowhead Stadium to keep its doors open in order to act as a voting location, helping to guarantee everyone in the K.C. area had an opportunity to let their voices be heard.

While speaking to the media during training camp on July 30 of this year, Mahomes told reporters, “[The K.C. community] always believed in me, so I want to show that same love back to the community.” Mahomes has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he truly values Kansas City and the people that comprise it.

The Chiefs made the right move by investing heavily into their star quarterback, who is now the face of the NFL. And what did Mahomes do in response? He turned around and invested right back into the community where his professional career began. With these current times of uncertainty, it is refreshing and reassuring to know that Mahomes and Kansas City will continue to mutually empower the other for many years to come.
